Kottayam & Chengannoor Depots implemented GPRS enabled ETMs (Electronic Ticketing Machines) for trial on live data. GPRS stands for the General Packet Radio Service, is the technology uses to transfer data over the mobile 2G or 3G network.
GPRS enabled ETM simply means that, it having a BSNL 3g mobile sim card and by using this it can send all the ticket data details to the central server computer. Now the central server was temporarily arranged for trial of 600 ETMs at Bangalore, at ETM manufacturing company headquarters.
Later the Central Server Computer for all the 5000 ETMs will install at the Electronic Data Processing Centre (EDPC), KSRTC head quarters, East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram. After the installation of Central server it needs a month to implement the new ETM in all depots. For the installation of Central server I think it will take up to 6 months.
By using the live data from the ETM can locate the bus, can know the number of passengers in the bus, how many buses are running in the same route. The type of each bus (ie Fast, Super Fast, Express……etc.). At what time the bus will reach at a particular bus station. etc. For eg at Kottayam bus station KSRTC can display the locations of Super Fast buses between Kasargod and Thiruvananthapuram, going to Thiruvananthapuram. And these Super Fast bus’s expected time of arrival at kottayam can also display. All these information are useful for passengers.
By using the live ticket data, can avoid running a group of buses together in the same route with fewer passengers. Can make route studies to find, in which route, at which time more buses are needed. And which trips of a service having less collection. Thus KSRTC can improve its collection and can operate buses when people are needed.
For effective utilization of this ETM data to improve the service operation, KSRTC needs an excellent Information Technology Department with talented and experienced computer professionals. Present computer center of KSRTC is the EDP Centre and it should be expanded with computer professionals.
